Local SEO for home service businesses comes down to one question: when someone nearby searches for what you do, do they find you? For a plumber, roofer or cleaner, that search usually ends on Google Maps, not on page two of a website list.

This guide covers what actually moves the needle, in the order we’d tackle it. Some of it PostPixel helps with. Most of it you can do yourself this week.

What local SEO means for a service business

Google shows local results based on three things it describes in its own guide to improving local ranking: relevance, distance and prominence.

  • Relevance: does your profile clearly match the search?
  • Distance: how close are you to the person searching?
  • Prominence: how well known and well reviewed are you?

You can’t move your shop closer to every customer. You can work on relevance and prominence.

Start with your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile is the single most important local SEO asset you have.

Fill in every field

Pick the right primary category. Add every service you offer, your service area, your hours and a short description in plain words. “Emergency water heater repair in Mesa and Chandler” beats “quality solutions for all your needs.”

Add real photos, often

Photos of your trucks, your crew and finished jobs show Google and customers that you’re real and busy. Old stock photos don’t help.

Post updates regularly

Google Business Profile lets you publish posts: a finished job, a seasonal tip, an offer. A profile with recent posts looks active. A profile that last posted in 2023 doesn’t.

This is where PostPixel fits. You upload your business photos and PostPixel turns them into branded posts for your Google Business Profile, as well as Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. Connect your Google Business Profile once, select it when you approve a post, and PostPixel posts it there. Post now or schedule it.

Keep your name, address and phone the same everywhere

Use the exact same business name, address and phone number (often called NAP) on your website, your Google profile, Facebook, Yelp and any directories you’re listed on. “Smith Plumbing LLC” in one place and “Smith’s Plumbing & Drain” in another makes Google less sure you’re one business.

Check your main listings once a quarter. It takes about an hour.

Get fresh reviews, and answer them

Reviews feed prominence, and customers read them closely. BrightLocal’s 2026 survey found 74% of consumers only care about reviews from the last three months.

  • Ask after every good job, by text, with a direct review link.
  • Reply to every review, good or bad, in a sentence or two.
  • Turn your best reviews into posts. PostPixel can turn your Google reviews into branded posts once your Google Business Profile is connected.

Make your website do its part

Your website supports your local SEO. It doesn’t replace your Google profile.

Service and area pages

Give each main service its own page, and mention the towns you serve in plain text. Don’t create 40 near-identical city pages. Google treats those as thin content.

Phone number up top

Put a tap-to-call number at the top of every page. Most local searches happen on phones.

Basic schema

Ask your web person to add LocalBusiness schema with your name, address, phone and hours. It helps search engines read your details correctly.

Post local content people care about

Relevance comes from content too. The easiest local content is the work you already do:

  • A before-and-after from a job in a named neighborhood (with the customer’s OK).
  • A freeze warning tip when the forecast drops.
  • Your crew at a local event you sponsored.

Steady posting matters more than clever posting. We go deeper on that in why local businesses don’t need to become influencers.

What PostPixel does and doesn’t do for local SEO

We’d rather be clear about this.

PostPixel does: turn your business photos and Google reviews into branded posts, publish them to your Google Business Profile, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn, and show views, engagement and a monthly coverage calendar on your dashboard so you can see whether you’ve stayed consistent.

PostPixel doesn’t: manage directory citations, build links, edit your website or track your search rankings. For those, use your web developer or a dedicated SEO tool.

FAQ

How long does local SEO take to work?

Profile fixes and fresh reviews can help within weeks. Steady posting and reviews keep building over months.

Do Google Business Profile posts help rankings?

Google doesn’t publish a ranking weight for posts. They do keep your profile looking active and give searchers a reason to call. We treat them as a trust signal, not a ranking trick.

Should I make a page for every town I serve?

Only if you have something useful and different to say on each page. Otherwise, list your service area clearly on one page.

Do I need an SEO agency?

Not to start. A complete Google profile, consistent listings and fresh reviews cover the basics. Bring in help when you want links or a bigger website.
